Licensing & Exam Information

Journeyman Electrician

An applicant for Journeyman Electrician must (1) have at least 8,000 of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician and (2) pass a journeyman electrician exam.


The Journeyman Electrician exam is 240 minutes, consisting of 80 items (5 non-scored) and requires a passing score of 70%. It is based on the 2017 National Electrical Code®.

Master Electrician

An applicant for Master Electrician must (1) have at least 12,000 of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician, (2) have held a journeyman electrician license for at least two years, and (3) pass a master electrician exam.


The Master Electrician exam consists of two portions: (1) NEC Knowledge and (2) Calculations. The NEC Knowledge portion is 150 minutes, consisting of 75 items (5 non-scored) and requires a passing score of 70%. The Calculations portion is 170 minutes, consisting of 33 items (3 non-scored) and requires a passing score of 70%. It is based on the 2017 National Electrical Code®.
